We often get many questions at the gallery and at Country Corner, and so we'll try to address the questions asked most frequently by visitors.
First, THE GALLERY QUESTIONS:
- Is outsider art folk art? No.
- Is the folk art shown at your gallery outsider art? Most definitely not.
- Just what is folk art? Folk art is art created by people not academically trained as artists. In a word, self-taught.
- But isn't outsider art done by people who are self-taught? Yes, as a general rule.
- So isn't outsider art folk art? No. Art scholars and folklorists--who, invariably, would agree on almost nothing--would nevertheless agree that folk art comes from inside religious, cultural, regional traditions. It is an expression--a celebration--of those traditions. Folk art, therefore, is insider art. Outsider art, by definition, is not insider art.
- Isn't outsider art also about the celebration of traditions? No. Outsider art has nothing to do with traditions. And with outsider art the emphasis is frequently not on the art. With outsiders, it's the story that counts. Is he black? Does he live on a dirt road? Does he chew tobacco and spit it out of both his ears? At the same time? And did he ever try to kill his mother? Or his kid sister? Is he in jail?
- But isn't the background of an artist of some importance? Some. But not much. At the gallery we tend to talk about the art, not about the artist. Is it a good painting, or bad? Is it a subject for which the artist is particularly well known and recognized? How does this particular painting match up against other paintings by the same artist? And how does it compare with paintings by other artists?
- Who are these people who create folk art and outsider art? Outsiders live on the margins of American life. Folk artists live in the mainstream. Outsiders are often troubled people living their lives in isolation or, frequently, they find themselves institutionalized because of emotional or mental instabilities or incarcerated because of criminal conduct. Folk artists are everyday Americans, with families and friends, and homes, and mortgages, and pets, and soccer games, and tuition, and church, and bills, and debt, often with full-time jobs.
