Lieberman was a painter known for his portrayal of Jewish folk life.
Lieberman immigrated from Poland to the United States as a young man. After working at various jobs in Manhattan's lower east side, he purchased a confectionery store that he operated with his wife, Sophie. He sold the business when he was 40 but, because he was bored, he bought back the business and operated it again until he was 76 years of age, at which time he once again sold the business. He was bored again, however, so he began to paint--"if you have activity that is what brings you back to life," he said--and continued to do so for the next 27 years, when he died in 1983 at the age of 103.
Lieberman is best known for his scenes of Jewish folk life and his memories of his early days in Poland.
A retrospective of his work was shown at the Museum of American Folk Art, New York, in 1994. Paintings by Lieberman are in the permanent collection of many museums, including the Museum of American Folk Art, New York, the Jewish Museum, New York, and the Hirshhorn Museum of Art and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.
