It has often been said that one man's trash is another man's treasure. And it is most certainly true for Leo Sewell, who has turned mountains of trash into fabulous treasures. Leo spent his childhood in Annapolis, Maryland, where he lived not far from the navy dump. And he found the dump irresistible. He went to the dump constantly, and always retrieved troves of "stuff" that intrigued him. Even as a child, Leo began to recycle the trash that he had hauled home, making whimsical. wonderful assemblages. In 1974, Leo moved to Philadelphia because the pickings were so good. And he has been picking trash in the city of brotherly love ever since. The objects that Leo retrieves are carefully assambled into representational forms--a cat, dachshund, eagle, teddy bear, duck, and practically anything and everything else--that range in size from home pets to a life-size horse. Leo seeks to let the viewer enjoy the assemblage as a whole, while at the same time being able to recognize each of the individual objects from its past.
