Living in Washington, D.C. as a child, and attending a private school for girls, Susan was raised in a world in which she received an early exposure to and appreciation for art. These early experiences undoubtedly influenced the high degree of sophistication in her work when later in life she began to paint.
Susan's compositions are meticulously organized, and they are rendered with both a touch of sophistication and a touch of naivete as well. Line and color are skillfully manipulated to obtain maximum effect, and details are calculated to enhance the overall purpose of the composition rather than being the spontaneous expression of the artist's past, as is the case with many memory painters.
Rather than relying on memory, Susan draws her inspiration from stories she has read, things she sees, or tales of olden times related by country people in the vicinity of the small town in upstate New York where she now resides.
Animals and music are Susan's great loves. The love for animals explains why animals figure so prominently in so many of Susan's paintings. And the love for music is reflected in the lyrical quality so evident in the structure and design of her paintings.
